Women Making Mana History Spotlight:

🌺 We are better when we reveal our truth. We grow when we face our traumas. We evolve when we share our lessons. As we conclude our HERStory spotlights of some of the amazing women behind Mana Boxes, we want to shine a light on our Founders, Michelle Klassen Merrigan and Anni Wilhelmi. Michelle and Anni have been the best of friends for years and amaze us with their prowess in working through the commonalities of womanhood, child-rearing, and business. Global citizens and women of great passion and compassion, their collaboration to uplift women in South Africa is why Mana Boxes exist. Anni sourced the products for the Mana Boxes through her vast women in business peer advisory networks. The reach extended throughout rural and major centers of South Africa and included African refugees. Among the requirements to be included in the Mana Boxes program is that these small and informal businesses employ women to create the product and to source raw materials where women would benefit. Together with Michelle’s vast experience incubating economic models to support a more sustainable world, these champions of woman-owned small businesses are relentless in their efforts to reinforce the foundation for a better tomorrow through the Mana Boxes program where every curated piece tells HERStory.

Women Making Mana History Spotlight:

🌺 Born and raised in South Africa, environmental artist and jewelry designer Charmaine Taylor witnessed the cruelty of apartheid as a child and bore witness to the miracle transformation of her country – including Nelson Mandela’s celebrated release from prison. Through an incredible manifestation of purpose, Charmaine was granted exclusive rights to create jewelry and artwork from the prison fence at Robben Island (where the revolutionary leader “Madiba” was held in captivity for most of his 27-year sentence). Poignant, precious, profound, pieces from Charmaine’s @legacycollection are an exclusive feature #bonusbox item available at the conclusion of the annual #ManaBoxes subscription.

@bycharmainetaylor and her team of artisans have poured their hearts into these beautifully-crafted pieces from prison fencing. They embody our #mana and are a striking token of justice, equality, forgiveness, and freedom.

Women Making Mana History Spotlight:

🌺 Nowhere in South Africa can the resilience and sheer tenacity be felt more strongly than in the villages and dusty townships of Phalaborwa and Giyani, where more than 300 special women have defied their circumstances in an effort to break the cycle of poverty for themselves, their families and communities. Zana is one of the incredible ones. She is a Waste Picker who searches high and low for recyclables and single-use plastics that can be transformed from trash into a limitless source of potential, creating beautiful, luxurious and high-quality sustainable product. You’ll find her creation in our first Mana Box we call Journey through Africa. Zana has left her indelible impression on one of the most popular items in the box – a smart, no-nonsense computer tote bag and cable pouch. With every bottle Zana carefully gathers up, she is building “masekhethele” – in African languages it means “choose for yourself.”
